Anabar Plateau

Russia has plenty of beautiful places to visit. In fact, people who go there are often surprised and enthralled by the rivers, valleys, greenery, and the wildlife. After all, when you think of Russia, your mind immediately brings up a picture of a bitterly cold country. Nothing could be further from the truth; and at Taiga Travel, we delight in dispelling this misconception. One of our favorite places to take tourists to is Anabar Plateau. We know that our clients will be rendered speechless when they see it.

What’s Interesting about Anabar Plateau?

Anabar is located in the north-eastern part of the expansive Central Siberian Plateau. The river Kotuikan cuts through it in a bewildering pattern. It twists and turns across the plateau. All you need to do is follow the river to reach this untouched and unspoiled land.

This region has been assigned as a UNESCO World Heritage site for its sheer natural beauty and diversity. Anabar Plateau supports a number of ecosystems, including forest tundra, a clean and untouched taiga, tundra, and a beautiful Arctic desert. This is one of the few places on earth where you can see so many diverse ecosystems at once.

Anabar Plateau is particularly known for its rivers and cold-water lake systems. The water here is pristine and unspoiled. If you sit by the river and the lakes, you’ll feel the peace and serenity of this place sink into you. There are few other places on this earth that are as untouched by modern trappings and noise as this one. So if you need a break from your busy and stressful life, you can camp by the river and be sure that nothing and no one will disturb you.

The Oldest Rocks

We can wax poetic about the natural beauty of this place, but there’s much more to see here. The entire Central Siberian Plateau was once located in the Southern Hemisphere and was under water. Over the years, the region slowly moved to the Northern Hemisphere and away from the water.

The flow of the Kotuykan River has cut through this ancient landscape and revealed some of the most ancient rocks on earth. The oldest of them belong to the Proterozoic and Archean eras and are somewhere between 1600 and 3200 million years old! Imagine touching and feeling these rocks. It’s a memory that you’ll never forget.

Fun Activities to Do

If you want to do more than gaze at the scenery, Anabar Valley won’t disappoint you. The Kotuykan River is ideal for fly fishing and has a number of rare fresh-water fish that you won’t find anywhere else in the world. You can also try camping, rafting on the river, and hiking.
